O Sistema de Saúde em São Tomé e Príncipe conheceu, desde a independência a esta parte, um processo de desenvolvimento com avanços significativos e importantes, os quais se encontram reflectidos na evolução positiva que se reconhece nos principais indicadores de saúde. Contudo, nesse percurso, a urgência em fazer face às necessidades essenciais das populações, aliada ao contexto socioeconómico do país bastante vulnerável, proporcionou poucos espaços para uma planificação rigorosa, na qual estivessem sempre presentes aspectos tão importantes para a melhoria do acesso e da qualidade, como sejam o princípio da complementaridade e o da solidariedade.
