O estado de saúde da população e o perfil epidemiológico é em grande medida consequência do actual nível de desenvolvimento sócio-económico e é simultaneamente factor condicionante do seu ritmo de crescimento. O quadro epidemiológico de Moçambique é em larga medida de pré-transição, isto é, dominado por doenças transmissíveis, designadamente a malária, HIV/SIDA, diarreia, infecções respiratórias agudas e tuberculose, mas com uma importante ascenção de doenças não transmissíveis (doenças cardiovasculares, lesões, cancros, entre outras), particularmente na zona urbana.
